Smashing Pumpkins is a commercially successful band that emerged in the ‘90s. The original line-up comprised founders Billy Corgan, D’arcy Wretzky, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin. The band dropped their debut album, Gish, in 1991. The album was met with rave reviews and performed moderately well on the Billboard charts. Although the album was not able to soar high on the charts, loyal Smashing Pumpkins fans patronized the record over the years. Eight years after its release, Gish was certified platinum after selling over one million copies in the U.S.

The band achieved their first breakthrough two years after their debut, thanks to their sophomore effort, Siamese Dream. The album debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200 and entered the charts in nine other countries. The record, which spawned the hits “Rocket,” “Today,” and “Cherub Rock,” has been regarded as “one of the finest alternative albums of all time” by critics. Siamese Dream eventually earned quadruple platinum in the U.S. and sold over six million copies worldwide.

Just when rock fans back in the day thought that Smashing Pumpkins couldn’t do better. The band came out with the epic rock album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The career-defining effort is recorded to be the band’s best-selling album of their career. The 1995 record, which spawned the massive hits “Tonight Tonight,” “Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” and “1975,” sold over ten million copies in the U.S., earning the band their first diamond certification. The album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 and entered the charts in 20 other countries. The lead single, “Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” won the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1997. One year later, this phenomenal win was followed by another Grammy victory for the single “The End is the Beginning is the End,” which is found in the Batman and Robin official soundtrack album.

The band moved on to release several more chart-performing and critically acclaimed studio albums. They sold over 30 million albums worldwide and earned multiple accolades. In addition to their two Grammy Awards, Smashing Pumpkins had won two MTV Video Music Awards, an American Music Award, and an MTV Europe Music Award.

Today, Smashing Pumpkins’ line-up comprises all original members except for D’arcy Wretzky. Guitarist Jeff Schroeder joined the band in 2006 upon their reunion.
