Starting out with a light synthpop tone in the early 80s, Depeche Mode established their trademark dark, melancholy sound with the departure of Vince Clarke in 1981, leaving songwriting duties to Martin Gore. Their last albums of the 80s, “Black Celebration” and “Music for the Masses”, established them as a pioneering force on the new wave scene.
Depeche Mode have stayed active since their 80s hayday, and are looked upon as one of the most important groups in popular music, influencing everyone in every genre, from Lady Gaga to Marlilyn Manson to Funeral For A Friend, and their musical ability hasn’t waned in the slightest. Their latest album, “Spirit,” carries a strong humanitarian message, more relevant than ever in today’s day and age. "I wouldn't call this a political album," frontman Dave Gahan reflected, "because I don't listen to music in a political way. But it's definitely about humanity, and our place in that.”
